LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST ACR 47, La Suer Ramon Ojeda Memorial Highway. This measure would designate State Highway Route 78, between Third Street and State Highway 67, the Ramon Ojeda Memorial Highway. The measure would request the Department of Transportation to determine the cost for appropriate signs showing this designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering that cost, to erect those signs. WHEREAS, Army Specialist Ramon Ojeda was killed in action in Baghdad, Iraq on May 1, 2004, at the age of 22, when his convoy was attacked by terrorists; and WHEREAS, Ramon attended school in Ramona, California, and is survived by his wife, Lesliee, who is serving in the United States Army in Iraq, and by his 14-month-old son, Angel; and WHEREAS, Ramon's father, Jack Ojeda, a Vietnam veteran, met his mother, Maria, while serving in the United States Army; and WHEREAS, Ramon wrestled at Ramona High School and had a "can do" spirit and a remarkable ability to disarm and cheer up others with his levity; and WHEREAS, Specialist Ojeda joined the United States Army and was assigned to the Army's 25th Infantry Division; and WHEREAS, Specialist Ojeda was the first Ramona resident killed in action in Iraq; and WHEREAS, Ramon traveled State Highway 78 every day to school in Ramona, his family members and friends travel State Highway 78 every day to work, and his parents and family still live in the rural area east of Ramona; and WHEREAS, State Highway 78 should be renamed in Ramon's honor and in honor of all of the men and women serving in the United States Armed Forces; now, therefore, be it Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, that the Legislature hereby designates State Highway Route 78, between Third Street and State Highway 67, the "Ramon Ojeda Memorial Highway;" and be it further Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested to determine the cost of erecting the appropriate signs, consistent with the signing requirements for the state highway system, showing this special designation, and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering the cost, to erect those signs; and be it further Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the Department of Transportation and to the author for appropriate distribution.
